SAP Rating

What is a SAP Rating?

The Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP), revised in April 2006, is the UK methodology for calculating the energy performance of dwellings. A SAP assessment for new dwellings is a requirement by law. The SAP provides a rating, much like that used on domestic appliances ranging from 1 to 100. The higher the score, the more energy efficient and environmentally friendly the property. This also means the higher the score, the less running costs associated with that property. Both important future home selling points!

Who can carry out SAP Assessments?

Since April 2007 an authorised assessor registered as a competent person by FAERO must carry out SAP Assessments. Building control will not accept certificates issued in respect to TER & DER on the building control Part F checklist without the FAERO logo - example.
Air Assure Ltd are recognised by FAERO and building control as competent and are registered with NHER and FAERO.

What is involved?

The energy performance of a dwelling uses various indicators such as energy consumption per unit floor area, an energy cost rating (SAP), an Environmental Impact Rating (CO2 emissions) and a Dwelling CO2 Emission Rate (DER)

Factors effecting the calculation include:

  1. Materials used in construction
  2. Thermal insulation of the building fabric
  3. Ventilation of the dwelling and ventilation equipment
  4. Efficiency and control of the heating system
  5. Solar gains and orientation of the dwelling

  6. Fuel used to provide heat, ventilation and lighting

  7. Renewable energy technologies
